How Girls Build Makes Camp Accessible for Foster Kids

We’re investigating your questions about the foster care system this month, and we’re also meeting some amazing people who make a difference in the lives of foster children.

Katie Hughes founded Girls Build in 2016, the same year she became a foster parent. Her goal is to put literal tools—drills, hammers, and paintbrushes, to name a few—in the hands of girls to help give them access to the building trades. Girls Build hosts summer camps and after-school classes, and it’s doing next-level work to make those programs accessible to foster kids.

Check out our video to get the full scoop on Katie, her vision for Girls Build, and what she’s she learned about the barriers facing kids in the foster system.
