Meet a Bridgeliner Member: Devin Hutchings

We’re continuing our series on the people who make what we do possible — our supporting members. ❤️

Next up: Northeast Portlander and proud dog mom Devin Hutchings.

What neighborhood do you call home?

Alberta Arts District

What’s a local event you went to recently that you loved?

Bridgeliner posted in the events section about Moth StorySLAM, an open-mic storytelling competition where anyone can share a five-minute story on the night’s theme, or just enjoy the show.

I went to one and LOVED it, started listening to the podcast on my commute, and decided to tell a story myself. To my surprise, I won and will be competing in the GrandSLAM later this year!

What are you celebrating in your life right now?

With Pride month coming up, I have been feeling grateful that I live in a community where I feel comfortable being my authentic self. I’m celebrating the activists who fought to make that possible and the ones who are working to make that a reality for everyone.

What’s a local business you think deserves a shoutout?

Kramm LLC does branding and design for small businesses and non-profits. Audrey really sets herself apart because she’s not just a great designer/strategist, she also works with people to help them articulate their vision and make it come alive.

Since Portland is the land of side hustles, whenever I hear someone is starting their passion project, I recommend Audrey as the perfect person to help launch.

What’s a recent story you’ve read about Portland that you wish more people cared about?

The Oregon Department of Human Services has struggled to house its 7,500 foster children and often has no choice but to house children in hotels, homeless shelters, and refurbished jail cells. It’s heartbreaking that we have so many kids in the system that aren’t finding homes.

What’s something you’re working on — in big ways or small — that you could use help with?

I need help spreading the word about NLC’s upcoming event, “Fearless Future: A Benefit for NLC Portland.” The Portland New Leaders Council trains young professionals from all industries on advocacy to leverage their skill sets and networks to address issues in Portland.

NLC Fellows receive training in leadership development, fundraising, new media, communications, campaigns, and policy. This would be a great opportunity to learn more about NLC’s work and inquire about the fellowship. If you know of a budding leader in Portland, encourage them to attend!

Where in town might people run into you?

You can often find me at Fernhill Park with my girlfriend, Kanika, and our puppy, Aloo, playing fetch, or on the Donnie Vegas patio with friends. You might also run into me at a happy hour in Northwest, grabbing a snack before my UX design class at PNCA.

What made you decide to become a member of Bridgeliner?

I read the newsletter every morning and am constantly using it as resource. Having quality local journalism is such a privilege so I jumped at the chance to support Bridgeliner. Also the member perks helped seal the deal. 😉
