🔥 Smoke on the horizon, fire in the sauce

The climb up Neahkahnie Mountain gains 1,450 feet in about 2.5 miles, but it has quite the payoff at the end. Thanks for the tag, Daniel!

Our calendar (👇)  is packed full of festivals this week, including the Hot Sauce Expo at OMSI, the Iranian Festival at PSU, the Venezuelan Festival at Oaks Park, and, of course, Pickathon at Pendarvis Farm.

ICYMI, we wrote this month about why Pickathon is such a big deal in Portland and gave you the scoop on how to get there by bike.

This week we’re listening through Pickathon’s official playlist on Spotify and adding a few favorites to a playlist of our own.

Want to help us out? Hit reply and let us know the artists and songs you’re most excited to see at this year’s festival. We’ll share our final Pickathon playlist on Thursday.

Smoke on the horizon. The wildfires in Northern California are more than 300 miles away, but the smoke is moving north in a hurry. Officials say a smoky haze will spread into Eugene today and could reach Portland later this week. (Willamette Week)

Also, earthquakes. If last week’s earthquakes off the Oregon coast renewed your anxiety about The Really Big One, a new report in SciTechDaily isn’t going to settle your nerves. The science gets wonky in a hurry, but the takeaway is pretty simple: If When the Cascadia subduction zone produces a major earthquake, the stretch of coast between Portland and Seattle will likely be hit the hardest. Decisions, decisions. The list of ballot measures that Oregon voters will weigh in on this fall just keeps growing. The latest initiative to officially qualify for November’s ballot? A proposal to ban state funding for abortion services. (OPB)

Ready to try an e-scooter? Portland’s dockless electric scooter experiment is underway, and a 10-minute test ride will only cost you a couple bucks. If you’re ready to give it a try, you can rent an e-scooter from Lime, Bird, or Skip. (KGW)

Farewell, Fanendo. The Timbers extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games on Saturday, and this one was extra special. Only hours after the club announced that Fanendo Adi would be playing his final game in Portland, the striker came off the bench and netted a game-winning goal in the 80th minute. Clutch. When we asked last week’s bridge trivia question, we knew there were two correct answers. Turns out there were actually three!

Props to reader Pamela Jordan for knowing that the original Burnside Bridge also swung open like a gate, along with the original Steel Bridge and Morrison Bridge.

We’ll have more Portland bridge trivia on Thursday. And for our own sake, no tricks this time. 👍👍
