Thanks to reader Craig Fossati for the reminder that Bridge Pedal is this Sunday. Here are the routes for this year’s ride.
And here’s a little history about one of the bridges you can pedal across — the Morrison.
WHAT: Morrison Bridge, built (most recently) in 1958
FUN FACT: The original Morrison Bridge was the city’s very first span across the Willamette. When it opened in 1887, it was the longest bridge west of the Mississippi.
WHY IT’S SPECIAL: Because it works! A low bar, sure, but one that the Morrison Bridge has spent most of the last six years struggling to clear. The bridge finally got its faulty deck debacle sorted out last year and reopened (for good, we hope) in October.
The Morrison was also one of four Multnomah County bridges added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The current span isn’t all that historic, but the original 1887 bridge created the first direct connection between downtown and the formerly separate city of East Portland. And it looked pretty darn cool.
AND THE #MORRISONBRIDGE INSTA-GRAMMY GOES TO… Thomas Greer (@thehonestdroner) for getting high. Really high.
QUOTABLE: “The bridge is crumbling. The deterioration has accelerated more than anticipated.” —attorney Joel Mullin in 2015, saying the last thing anyone wants to hear about a bridge
ICYMI, here’s last week’s bridge feature about the Morrison’s neighbor to the north: the Burnside.
The ‘juicing’ economy. The arrival of dockless e-scooters in Portland has brought a new side hustle to town: juicing scooters. Lime advertises that you can make $150 or more per night collecting, charging, and returning their scooters to the streets, but apparently $30-50/night is more common — and if your car has a small trunk, it can be even less. (Willamette Week)
Stick to your turf, Seattle. The New York Times invited a collective eye roll this week when it wrote that “many people” in Portland call the city “Portlandia.” But here’s the real kicker — the journalist who wrote the story is Kirk Johnson, and he’s from freakin’ Seattle. Classic. (OregonLive)
Funny until someone gets hurt. The whacko conspiracy theory that Voodoo Doughnuts is running a child trafficking operation ought to be something to laugh at. But then you remember that some people actually believe this ish, and some of them have guns, and it becomes a lot less funny. 😑 (Media Matters)
Where to watch the shooting stars. The Perseid meteor shower this weekend might deliver the best shooting star show of the year, and The O has some good advice for where to watch. Its list of the darkest locations near the city includes Vista House, Cooper Mountain Nature Park, and Bald Peak Viewpoint. (OregonLive)
Just humor us. Is it a huge deal that the flavor, thickness, and exact greasiness of Juanita’s Tortilla Chips vary from bag to bag? Maybe not. But Juanita’s does fuel a good number of the newsletters we write here at Bridgeliner (Ben is kinda obsessed), so this new side-by-side, good-chip-bad-chip comparison on Reddit is a story we feel compelled to share. Sorry, not sorry. (Reddit)
