What Portland is talking about

It might not be the most important news of the day, but this Wall Street Journal profile of Portland multi-millionaires Eric and Alia Breon is, well, pretty rich.

Eric Breon founded the rental management company Vacasa in Portland 10 years ago, and it’s gone very well for him.

Breon and his wife now own 57 vacation homes around the country, including seven “massive” homes that the couple likes to use for family reunions and weddings.

Their primary residence is a 6,000 square-foot mansion in the West Hills that the Breons reportedly hated when they bought it for $1.6 million. But after three years and $2.5 million of renovations, it’s now finally up to snuff.

Indoor rock climbing wall? Check.

Oak floors? Obviously.

$100k kitchen? Complete.

Meanwhile, back down in Normalville, there’s a totally unrelated “home improvement” project we’d love for you to know about: the neighbors in Rose City Park (where Ben lives) are trying to raise $100k to improve a community playground that’s falling into disrepair.

This Sunday evening, the Baerlic Brewing Beer Hall on Halsey is donating a chunk of all proceeds to the cause. Ben will be there from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and if you show up to support, beers are on him. 🍻

In other news…

Oregon Republicans continue to block Senate business by playing hooky, even after Democrats waved the white flag on a climate bill that Republicans oppose. The walkout is now entering its second week, and it’s anyone’s guess how this will end. (Willamette Week)

The World Naked Bike Ride is coming to Southeast Portland this weekend, and if you’re planning to join the fun, it’s worth brushing up on the rules of the road. (OregonLive)

Having trouble making friends in Portland? Handing out free donuts might do the trick. According to one Redditer who gave it a try, “the happiness a donut gives to people is awesome.” (Reddit)
