What Portland is talking about

3 things to know today

🌧️The rain is late and the smoke is overstaying its welcome. Smoke from Oregon wildfires was projected to dissipate earlier this week, but it looks like its memory is a little foggy, because an air quality advisory will remain in effect through Friday. On the other hand, rain that was predicted Tuesday may show up fashionably late toward the end of the week. (OPB / Portland Mercury)

🔥 Alaska Airlines has suspended all flights to PDX due to smoke. Portland’s busiest serving airline cited the hazardous conditions created by wildfire smoke as the reason for the suspension. The decision which will also affect Alaska’s sister airline, Horizon, was made in an effort to protect both guests and staff. 💰 Unemployed Oregonians could qualify for an extra $300/wk. Redirected federal funds eligible to those who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic are still available retroactively. However, most applicants must first certify their eligibility at the Oregon Employment Department website. Thousands of Oregonians could be eligible to receive the emergency funds. 3 things to make you smile

🍞Tuck into your avocado toast — shokupan style. Kimura is a celebration of Japanese cafes known as kissaten, and they are serving up avocado toast on thick, fluffy Japanese milk bread. (Willamette Week)

🍺 Attend Cider Summit PDX…from your couch. This year’s Cider Summit will feature tasting kits to be enjoyed from the safety of your home on Sept. 17. Kits include a selection of ciders; two Cider Summit tasting glasses; apple and pear shaped stress balls; swag from participating cidermakers; and access to the Northwest Cider Association’s “Cider Festival in a (Zoom) Box” during the festival. 🍲 Portland restaurants and kitchens are providing wildfire relief. From feeding firefighters to providing meals for evacuees, the Portland restaurant community has rallied together to help those in need. (EaterPDX)

💖 We do things differently here

It’s not a coincidence that our newsletters focus on making sense of the chaos, separating fact from fiction, and connecting you with resources and opportunities to help.

Frankly, we do things differently because we pay the bills differently.

Unlike many other publishers, our business model isn’t all about selling eyeballs to advertisers and trying to be the biggest billboard in town.

We succeed when we build trust — and when our readers reward that trust by becoming supporting members.

It’s a difficult time to spend money. We get that. But if you can invest $8/month to support our work, we promise to keep doing things differently and being a voice you can trust, especially in moments like this one.

💚 How to make sure Black lives are front and center

Black Americans are more likely to breathe polluted air, more likely to live near a landfill, and more likely to die from the combination of these things than other Americans.
